If you’re a voice actor or looking to break into the industry, having the right equipment is crucial for producing professional-quality recordings. But what do you really need to get started? In this blog, I’ll share my setup, experiences, and tips for beginners and experienced voice actors alike. Let’s start with the most important aspect: your recording environment.
The Most Important Investment: Your Recording Space
A good recording space is more important than having an expensive microphone or preamp. Why? Because unwanted noises and echoes can render your recordings unusable. I personally use the Studiobricks One VO Edition, a professional, soundproof booth from the Spanish company Studiobricks. It’s a fantastic investment for advanced voice actors.
If you’re just starting out, don’t worry—you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars right away. With some creativity, you can create a decent recording space:
• Mattresses: Affordable options from Ikea work great for soundproofing.
• Furniture: Chairs, couches, carpets, and shelves help absorb sound.
• Curtains and Clothes: Thick curtains and a wardrobe full of clothes make a significant difference.
• Your Car: Did you know you can record in your car? Park in a quiet spot, like a garage, and you’ll have a surprisingly effective insulated space.
Microphone: Essential, but Not the Most Important
I use the Sennheiser MKH416, a directional microphone that minimizes background noise, making it ideal for many situations. It’s a favorite in the voice-over industry. I also own a Neumann TLM-103, an excellent microphone in terms of price and quality. If you’re just starting out, you don’t need to invest in high-end microphones right away. Brands like Rode offer great, affordable options. Make sure to go for an XLR microphone as it offers better flexibility and quality than most USB microphones.
Preamp: Enhancing Quality and Using Plugins
My preamp of choice is the Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Duo, an incredible device that allows me to run audio plugins. This means I can enhance my sound during recording with compression, EQ, or a gate, without overloading my computer. For beginners, a simpler preamp like the Focusrite Scarlett series is a reliable and affordable choice.
Computer: Quiet, Reliable, and Efficient
I use a Mac Mini M4 Pro (2024), which is perfect for my recordings. It generates very little heat, making it unlikely for the fan to kick on during a session. For absolute silence, consider a MacBook Air, which has no fan and stays cool. Pro tip: if your computer does have a fan, place it outside your recording space to avoid unwanted noise.
Monitors: Editing Your Audio Accurately
To edit my recordings, I rely on Eve SC203 monitors. These compact speakers are ideal for my desk and provide clear and precise sound, perfect for fine-tuning my audio.
Why Investing in the Right Equipment Matters
You don’t need a fully professional setup right away. Start with what you can afford and upgrade your gear as your career progresses. Focus on your recording space first; even the most expensive microphone won’t sound good in a poor acoustic environment. If you’re further along in your career, upgrading to professional equipment like a Studiobricks booth or a high-end microphone such as the Sennheiser MKH416 can make a world of difference.
Conclusion: What Equipment Really Means for Voice Actors
For voice actors, it’s about more than just having the right gear. It’s a combination of technical skill, creativity, and professionalism. The right tools ensure your voice sounds its best while streamlining your workflow for a smooth and efficient process.
