Standing or Sitting: What Works Best for a Professional Voice Talent?

As a professional voice talent, I’m often asked, “Do you sit while recording, or do you stand?” The answer is simple: it depends entirely on the type of project I’m working on. Different voice-over projects require different approaches, and as an experienced voice talent, I adjust my methods accordingly. Let me explain how and why the choice between standing or sitting can significantly impact the final recording.

When a Voice Talent Stands: Maximum Energy

For projects that require a lot of energy, such as commercials with powerful, clear messages, I always stand. This is especially true for hard-sell commercials where the energy needs to burst through the recording, and I want to maximize my vocal strength. By standing, I can engage my whole body, brace myself, and literally project more volume and power into my voice. For example, with toy commercials like the one I voiced for Waggles from Animagic, standing is essential.

I also prefer standing for animation and dubbing projects. These types of work often demand a high level of energy, varied intonation, and a dynamic voice. Standing gives me the freedom to physically embody the characters and emotions I need to convey, which results in a much livelier and more authentic performance.

Sitting for a Relaxed Tone

On the other hand, for projects that require a more relaxed and calm tone of voice, such as corporate videos, web videos, or commercials with a softer approach, I choose to sit. This allows me to fully relax and give my voice more depth. When my whole body is at ease, it helps me produce the subtle nuances of a calm and relaxed tone. Sitting also helps me maintain a slower pace and softer sound, which is perfect for projects that call for a natural, trustworthy voice—like in this commercial for Holland & Barrett.

Why Position Matters for a Professional Voice Talent

As a professional voice talent, it’s crucial not only to find the right tone and energy but also to adapt my physical stance to get the best out of my voice. Standing gives me power and control, which is essential for energetic recordings. Sitting, on the other hand, helps me achieve the relaxed, deep tones that are vital for quieter or more intimate projects.

Each project is unique and demands its own approach. That’s why I always adjust my posture and energy levels to match the needs of the project. My goal remains the same: to deliver the perfect recording that fits the tone of voice and style the client is looking for.
